Bovec - Učeja - Sella Carnizza Bovec - Učeja - Sella Carnizza Additional Image

This is a tough route from Bovec that includes two longer ascents. Altogether, it covers just over 50 km with approximately 1300 m of climbing.

The route starts in Bovec, and to avoid crowded roads in summer, we immediately take a short warm-up climb to the village of Plužna. I recommend taking this climb easy, as it has some relatively steep sections—try to maintain a high cadence for a proper warm-up. Follow the main route, and be cautious when descending, as the road passes through tight spaces between houses and features two steep switchbacks. A few kilometers further, on the right, you'll see Slovenia’s tallest waterfall, Boka. Continue on the main road until you reach a turnoff leading uphill into the Učeja Valley.

Here, the first climb begins—a steady ascent of just over 300 m at an average gradient of 6.5%. At the top, you'll reach an abandoned border crossing, unused since Slovenia joined the Schengen Zone. A short, twisty descent follows, leading to a bridge crossing over the river. From here, the main climb to Sella Carnizza begins—an extended, steady ascent of over 500 m in vertical gain. Enjoy the spectacular views at the summit.

The return follows the same route. After rejoining the main road, continue until you reach a parking lot on the right, then cross the Soča River. After the bridge, turn left to avoid main road traffic. Stay on the asphalt road through the village of Čezsoča. After passing through the village and crossing the river again, you'll reach a short, intense two-minute effort—a perfect opportunity to go all out and test your performance. From there, cool down as you ride back to Bovec.
