Bovec – Predil Pass – Sella Nevea – Montasio Plateau – Bovec
Route length: 70km
Vertical climb: 1700m
Estimated time: 4-5h at 2.5W/kg
Difficulty: Hard
This tour is a great alternative to the Mangart climb when the Mangart road is still closed due to winter conditions. While there is no single extremely long ascent, the route includes two long climbs with several steep sections, making it physically demanding. The route starts in Bovec and heads towards Italy via the Predil Pass. The Predil climb is challenging and rewards you with stunning alpine scenery. After reaching the junction with the Mangart road, continue left over the bridge. From here, the terrain becomes slightly flatter as you approach the Italian border crossing. After crossing into Italy, a short descent follows. Be cautious in the tunnel along this section: it contains a sharp bend and has limited lighting. Reduce your speed and remove sunglasses if necessary. The descent ends at Lake Predil, where you turn left towards the Sella Nevea ski area. Upon reaching Sella Nevea, the main road begins to descend via switchbacks. In the middle of one of these switchbacks, turn right onto a smaller road that climbs steeply towards the Montasio Plateau. This ascent is short but demanding. Continue all the way to the end of the asphalt road. At the top, you are rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding Alps in every direction. The route is an out-and-back ride, returning the same way to Bovec. On the return journey, the scenery appears entirely different, making the ride equally enjoyable on the way back.
