To the source of Soča river
Starting in Bovec, this scenic route follows the emerald waters of the Soča River into the tranquil Trenta Valley. The road climbs gently at first, making it an enjoyable ride where you can fully take in the dramatic alpine surroundings, from dense forests to towering peaks. In July and August, traffic can be quite heavy, so extra caution is advised.
As you progress deeper into the valley, traffic gradually thins out and the atmosphere becomes more peaceful. The first more sustained climb begins after reaching Trenta village, where the road transitions from a false flat into a more noticeable ascent. At around the 24 km mark, you reach a fork in the road—continuing straight leads toward Vršič Pass, while turning off takes you toward the Source of the Soča River. From this point, the climb becomes slightly steeper, and after roughly 100 meters of additional ascent, the asphalt road comes to an end.
Here, you’ll find a small mountain hut, an ideal place to take a break and enjoy local specialties—especially the delicious cottage cheese dumplings (štruklji), a well-earned reward after the climb. From this point onward, access to the actual spring continues on foot along a marked trail leading into the rocky slopes above.
The return to Bovec follows the same route, now mostly descending. With smooth gradients and scenic surroundings, it’s a relaxed and enjoyable ride back through one of Slovenia’s most beautiful alpine valleys.
